a mixed media life

Working in the studio, well in this case the kitchen table, always puts me into a different space, a very easy and contented tactile rhythm of texture, flow and intuitive thought.  A deadline is always good for me too, and I have a piece I am getting ready for another exhibition starting next week.  Though after submitting the photograph I wanted to show, and while contemplating the mechanics of printing and framing the piece for the gallery I realized that that particular format didn't feel quite right.  I am still finding my way around my own style and presentation as an artist in the 3 dimensional world, and eventually I realized I could use the photo to make a mixed media art quilt... ahh, much more my speed, and it all is falling into place.

I find it amazing how listening to tiny bits of inner wisdom can have such a profound impact.  I certainly could have printed and framed the image and it might have been quite lovely, but this format feels so much richer and connected to my own voice and process.  "Make an art quilt" has been scribbled in my idea notebook for quite some time now and I even have a small archive of pieces that have inspired me to try this medium.

There is something about this piece too, called appropriately "Finding My Way", that has brought together my story, my inspiration, and this time in my life where opportunities are opening up as I delve into new and exciting creative outlets.  It parallels a deep search for truth, a desire to finally connect to my own narrative and to be the person I am, fully and unapologetically.

The Town and Beach Show at Newburyport Art Assocociation opens this Wednesday, July 4th.
